ATLAS comprises 3000 researchers from approximately 181 institutions across 41 countries worldwide, making it one of the largest collaborative efforts in science. About 1200 doctoral students are involved in operating the detector, data collection, and analysis. The collaboration relies on the efforts of numerous physicists, engineers, and technical staff. Since 1996, our group has been involved in various phases of the detector’s development, including design, construction, integration, operation, data collection, and analysis. We have had significant responsibilities, led several working groups, and made notable scientific contributions throughout these phases.

Towards 2027, a tenfold increase in the number of LHC collisions is expected in the High Luminosity (HL-LHC) phase, requiring detectors to be adapted. Particularly, the entire readout electronics of the hadronic calorimeter will need to be replaced. Our group is responsible for designing new readout and data acquisition electronics for the hadronic calorimeter. This phase will significantly enhance the collider’s performance, particularly increasing the instantaneous luminosity, expected to exceed nearly ten times the nominal value of the LHC’s initial design. The new electronics are based on the development of a novel module known as the TilePPr (PreProcessor).

The group has contributed to the physics program of the ATLAS experiment since before the start of LHC collisions, notably in the field of Higgs boson physics. The group has directly, actively, and visibly contributed to measurements of H→WW and H→ττ, leading to the observation of the Higgs boson by the ATLAS and CMS experiments in 2012, resulting in the Nobel Prize in Physics awarded to P. Higgs and F. Englert in 2013. Additionally, the group has played a primary role in measurements of Higgs boson-related discoveries, such as the observation of the Higgs boson’s Yukawa interaction in 2015 and the interaction between the top quark and the Higgs boson in 2018. Furthermore, the group has been prominent in measurements of Higgs boson pair production, which could confirm the Higgs boson’s self-interaction (“self-coupling”) and lead to the discovery of new particles that decay into Higgs bosons. The group also contributes to the search for new physics related to the Higgs sector and Supersymmetry theories.

granted research projects

       Ministry of Science and Innovation

      2025-2028 :: PID2024-156310NB-I00-
Upgrade of the ATLAS Tile Calorimeter and Trigger Systems, Physics Performance and Detector R&D for Future Circular Colliders

2023-2024 :: TED2021-130852B-I00
Design of High performance algorithms for Low power sustainable hardware for LHC experiments and their upgrades

2022-2025 :: PID2021-125069OB-100
Upgrade of the ATLAS Detector: Tile Calorimeter Electronics, Trigger and Physics Performance

2019-2021 :: RTI2018-094270-B-I00
Upgrade of the ATLAS detector: TileCal electronics and physics performance

2019-2021 :: • RTI2018-100863-B-I00
Contribución a la operación del experimento ATLAS, del detector interno de trazas, del calorímetro hadrónico y a su programa de Física

2016-2018 :: • RTI2018-100863-B-I00
Contribuciones al calorímetro hadrónico TileCal y al programa de Física del experimento ATLAS del LHC

       Generalitat Valenciana

      2025-2029 :: PROMETEO:CIPROM/2024/69
Advanced Data Processing T echnologies for Exploring New Physics in Future Particle Colliders

2022-2024 :: ASFAE/2022/008
Electrónica del Tile Calorimeter y Exploración del Programa de Física

2022-2024 :: CIAICO/2021/154
Estudio del autocoplamiento del bosón de Higgs en el experimento ATLAS del LHC

2019-2022 :: PROMETEO/2019/006
Search for new Physics at LHC with the ATLAS detector

phd thesis

      2025 :: Antonio Cervelló
Developments for the Data Acquisition and
Control Systems of the ATLAS Tile Calorimeter for the HL-LHC

2025 :: Antonio Gomez Delegido
Unveiling the higgs sector with tau-leptons: differential cross-section measurements and searches for lepton-flavor-violating decays with the Atlas Detector

2024 :: Lorenzo Varriale
Electron efficiency measurements and search for Higgs boson production in association with top quarks with the ATLAS experiment

2022 :: Ivan Sayago
Search for Higgs boson pair production in the two bottom quarks plus two photons final state in pp collision at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

2020 :: Sergi Rodríguez
Study of the Yukawa coupling of the Higgs boson to leptons using pp collisions at √s = 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

2018 :: Leonor Cerdá
Measurement of the Higgs boson coupling with tau leptons and search for an additional neutral MSSM Higgs boson with the ATLAS detector

2018 :: Damian Alvaréz
Measurement of the Higgs boson coupling with tau leptons and search for an additional neutral MSSM Higgs boson with the ATLAS detector

2017 :: Fernando Carrió
Development of read-out electronics for the ATLAS Tile Calorimeter at the HL-LHC

Meet our research team

Members

about us history The ATLAS IFIC-TDAQ Group develops its research activities as part of the international collaboration of the ATLAS experiment at the LHC at CERN.
